The Moon Song (Music From and Inspired By the Motion Picture Her)

It’s a testament to Karen O’s incredibly strong songwriting that the delicate “Moon Song” manages to stand out amidst the lush melancholia of Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett’s score for Her. The song was originally written as a duet between Scarlett Johansson and Joaquin Phoenix’s characters in the film, but it’s been rerecorded with Ezra Koenig as the assisting vocalist. The production values for the song have also been raised considerably compared to the lo-fi version we heard previously. “Singing this song with Ezra felt like fulfilling a wish of my die-hard romantic junior high self,” Karen O told Rolling Stone. Karen O is nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song and the whole soundtrack is nominated for Best Original Score.
