An infectious laugh is heard from the entrance of the room, and then I see its source, a 23 year old lady with a contagious smile and an impressive afro. Throw in edge, femininity with a little tomboy mix, a clear attention to detail and radiating confidence, I finally meet ebee.
As we speak, I’m drawn to her remarkable and humble personality. “That would be me”, she smiles, whilst revealing the mystery female rapper on her debut single “Won Me Over”. Nothing quite prepares you for the flawless transition from her beautiful singing vocals into a more distinct rap style that finishes each verse. “I wanted to introduce ebee the rapper and ebee the singer in my first record, you know, showcase both abilities equally so there are no misunderstandings afterwards”. We agree with her reasoning as some records on her soon to be released debut album “Cross Over” showcase her solely singing or rapping.
One man certainly Won Her Over; blasting “only the word of Jesus Christ from her speakers”, ebee explains with a more serious tone; “I have a responsibility to go out there and share The truth. I was really terrified of putting myself out but I’m determined not to make excuses and to stay who I am”. With a rich, beautiful and sleek tone, ebee’s distinctive vocals are undoubtedly memorable and recognizable. She is sometimes teased for her slightly auto-tune sounding voice; “God gave me my very own box, you know, it’s plugged adjacent to my vocal cords”, she jokes soothing her throat. This young lady is definitely comfortable in herself and confident in her God.
“Cross Over” promotes a powerful and commercial sound, delivers a dynamic combination of beautiful and rhythmic musical arrangements and most importantly promotes ebee’s skilful and stylish writing ability; using the exact words listeners can connect and identify with whilst revealing Who our lives should be centered around. Take “No More Wrestling” about giving up the battle against loving and obeying God, where ebee’s soulful and honest vocals cry; “no more wrestling with you, yes, yes, I give my life, whatever you decide”. For the aficionado, listening to Ebee is a truly uplifting experience of freshness and life.
On stage she gives her audience an even greater experience of this, – unmistakably delivering the message and revealing the characters behind each song, she indulges and captivates her audience further into the fullness of the world they could only truly experience live. “I love the stage, it’s me expressing and delivering my records. I’m connecting with different people and witnessing their different responses”. Ebee’s heartfelt vocals, entertainment, connective audience engagement, energizing and refreshing stage presence, leave each individual with exceptional experience of what Ebee coined, the “Ebeesphere”. “It’s when God takes over, you can feel His tangible presence, oh my God I love it” she exclaims, “the atmosphere literally changes. It’s electrifying. It’s the ebeesphere because I’m the vessel He’s using to change the atmosphere with His presence”.
“Cross Over” see’s ebee share her beliefs, experiences and concepts with her fans. ebee’s versatility is evident not only with regards to singing and rapping but her sound and writing. With definitive song titles like “Move Poof”, “Certified Banger” and “Secret Sin”, ebee certainly does not mix her words when she writes. “Cross Over” is not limited to a single genre, with songs like the more grimy, “Gimme” in which Ebee displays a cocky and saucy flow to match its message, the R’n’B standout, “Watch My God”, where she proclaims with unwavering confidence in her God “God will show that he runs my life, that he’s God in my life” and the hip hop anthem “I Am That I Am”.
Other surreal tracks include the old-school saxophone-flavored ballad – “I Demand” and the smooth R’n’B number – “Plz You So Bad” which has an unpredictable progression into dance music. Unexpectedly, yet reassuringly, there is also a beautiful worship song titled “Holy You Are”. In addition to the different and exciting vocal styles from Ebee, Cross Over also features the contributions of a plethora of talented artists. “Cross Over” contains favorite records everyone can listen to and love, from grand mothers to little 2 year olds.
Ebee makes music she genuinely feels, with a sincere voice and real and honest lyrics. “Its funny cause, sometimes I just wanna spit about a situation, other times I really want to sing it. There are times I want to do both because I’m coming from completely different perspectives and using different words. It’s all about whichever form gives me the most transparency”. Once you meet ebee, it is evident she does more than express herself through words. She radiates attributes of a dancer and is unmistakably one. “Dancing is the first way I learnt to express myself, its different, you don’t have to say anything, just feel and move”. With her talents, determination and hard work, there is certainly a lot more to come from this 23 year old and she’s sure coming with her knockout.
